Tungsten Carbide Blades: When Tool Steel Is Not Enough
Tungsten carbide blades vs tool steel: HRA 89-93 hardness, where carbide pays off, what to ask about pressing and sintering, and OEM special-shaped production.
Why Carbide, and When
Tungsten carbide blades earn their premium on two counts: extreme abrasion resistance and edge stability at hardness levels around HRA 89–93 — far beyond what tool steels reach. That makes carbide the default choice for abrasive, high-speed applications such as adhesive tape slitting, lithium battery electrode cutting and long-run film converting. It also makes carbide brittle, so formulation and sintering quality decide whether the blade chips in service.

What to Ask a Carbide Blade Supplier
• Who presses and sinters the carbide — in-house or bought-in blanks?
• Which grade for which application: fine-grain grades for sharp electrode edges, tougher binder grades where impact is present?
• Can they produce special shapes: circular blades, long knives, toothed knives and custom profiles to drawing?
• What edge inspection is standard — magnification, runout measurement, hardness reports?
Typical Carbide Applications
Typical carbide applications include tape slitting blades for transparent, electrical, cloth and double-sided tapes; circular cutting blades for lithium battery electrodes; and long-run slitter knives where tool steel would need daily regrinding. In each case the higher blade price is offset by the change in cost per cut meter, not by the blade price alone.

In-House Pressing and Sintering at ZHONGJIAN TECH
ZHONGJIAN TECH runs its own pressing and sintering workshops for tungsten carbide circular blades, long knives, toothed knives and special-shaped blades — customized to customer drawings and requirements. In-house carbide production means tighter control of porosity and grain size, and it keeps OEM lead times short. For grade selection by application, see our lithium battery slitting blade guide and tape slitting blade guide, or contact us to discuss your case.
