Bottom Slitter Knives and Anvil Bands: The Other Half of Slit Quality

Bottom slitter knives and anvil bands control slit quality as much as top knives. Learn sizing, wear patterns and how to pair them for clean cuts.

When slit quality drifts, the first suspect is usually the top knife. More often than not the real culprit is underneath — a worn bottom slitter knife or a grooved anvil band.

The Cut Is a Pair

Every top knife shears against a bottom knife or anvil. The bottom side carries the web on its edge, so any groove worn into it becomes the shape of every cut edge. Our top slitter blades article covers the upper half of the pair.

Sizing and Fit

Bottom knives are matched to the top knife diameter and the arbor system. The critical dimensions are bore fit, flatness and edge width — a knife that rocks on the arbor will not keep a consistent overlap with the top blade.

Wear Patterns to Watch

• A bright ring where the top knife rides — normal, but measure its depth • A wide flat groove — the knife is overdue for regrind and edges will show burrs • Eccentric wear — usually a bore problem, not an edge problem
Rotating bottom knife positions between regrinds evens out wear and extends set life on multi-lane lines.

Regrind Together

Regind top and bottom sets as a pair so their geometry stays matched. Mixing a new top knife with a grooved bottom knife simply moves the wear into the new edge.
