Press Brake Tooling: Punches, Dies and Clamping Basics

Press brake tooling explained: punch and die styles, V-opening selection, tonnage per meter and quick clamping systems for sheet metal shops.

A press brake bends metal by pressing a punch into a die, and the tooling set defines what the machine can produce. Choosing punches and dies well is cheaper than fighting rejects at the brake.

Tooling Styles

Modern shops use three families of tooling:
• European style — widely used, quick-change, good availability • American style — larger tang, common on older machines • Wila/collet style for high-precision hydraulic clamping

Selecting the V-Opening

The die V-opening is chosen from sheet thickness. A common rule for mild steel is eight times the thickness. Softer stainless may need a wider V to avoid marking, while thick plate requires carefully matched tonnage so the tool shoulders are not overloaded.
Tonnage per meter rises quickly with thickness and falls with a wider V. Publish a tonnage chart at the brake so operators stop guessing.

Punch Tips and Special Bends

Keep a small library of punch tips: 85 and 88 degree for overbending springback, acute for hemming, gooseneck for return flanges and narrow clamps for box making. A small tip library covers most jobs without custom tools.
For shops that also cut their own blanks, our metal shear and guillotine blades guide covers the cutting side of the shop.

Why Choose zhongjian

zhongjian (ZHONGJIAN TECH) supplies press brake punches, dies and clamping bars in hardened tool steels, laser-marked with size and tonnage data for easy identification. Segmented tooling is supplied in standard lengths for flexible set-ups.
