Separator Discs for Slitting Lines: Function, Sizing and Wear Control
Separator discs keep slit strips apart on metal slitting lines. Learn how to size them, when to use rubber or steel, and how wear shows up in strip quality.

After the knives cut the strip, thin metal strips want to nest back together. Separator discs — sometimes called separator blades or fanning knives — ride in the slit between strips and keep them apart until they leave the machine.
Why Separators Matter
Without separators, slit strips scrape against each other and against the fresh cut edge. The result is scratch marks, edge burrs transferring between strips and, in the worst case, strips weaving together and jamming the scrap baller or recoiler.

Choosing Thickness and Material
Separator thickness must be less than the slit width but thick enough to resist bending. Typical practice keeps the disc about 20 to 30 percent thinner than the slit. Material options:
• Hardened tool steel — the standard for steel strip slitting
• Rubber covered discs — for surface-critical materials such as stainless and aluminum
• Thin carbide — for very narrow slits and long campaigns
Together with slitter arbor spacers and the knives themselves, separators complete the tooling set for a slitting line.

Wear Symptoms
Watch for grooving where the disc rides against the strip edge, and for the disc running off-center because the bore has worn. Both show up as scratches near the slit edge. Replace separators when the groove becomes measurable with a fingernail — they are cheap insurance compared with downgraded coils.
Why Choose zhongjian
zhongjian (ZHONGJIAN TECH) manufactures separator discs, slitter knives and spacers as matched sets for metal service centers. Discs are ground parallel with tight bore tolerance so they run true at line speed.
