Rubber Bonded Stripper Rings: Specs, Sizes and Replacement Tips

On a slitting line the knives get the attention, but the stripper rings decide whether the slit strips leave the machine flat and scratch-free. Rubber bonded stripper rings press the web down over the bottom knife so each cut separates cleanly.
What Stripper Rings Do
Each bottom knife is paired with a rubber bonded ring that slightly overlaps the knife edge. The elastic face grips the strip as the blade shears, preventing the web from riding up with the knife and stopping burrs from lifting into the product.
Standard Sizes and Rubber Hardness
Rings are specified by outside diameter, width and bore, matching the slitter arbor and knife set. Rubber hardness is selected by material:
• Softer rubber (Shore A 60-70) — thin or sensitive surfaces such as pre-painted sheet and film laminates
• Medium hardness (Shore A 70-80) — general steel strip and foil work
• Harder rubber — heavy gauge or high tension lines where the web fights back

When to Replace
Replace rings when the rubber face develops a worn groove, glazing, or a flat spot from a stopped line. A glazed ring lets the web slip, and the first symptom is usually edge quality drifting out of spec even though the knives are sharp.
Keep one spare ring set per arbor configuration so a damaged ring never idles the line. Because rings are inexpensive relative to knives, most plants replace them at every knife regrind cycle.
